The World According to Winds

Unabashed wind enthusiast James Austin Smith leads Music@Menlo on a journey through music history from a wind player’s perspective. For the first time at the festival, the evolution of these singular voices is revealed, from their origins in antiquity to their beguiling influence on composers from the Renaissance to today. Smith offers our audience the opportunity to openly embrace the chamber music love that dare not speak its name - that of instruments without strings.

Hearing Memory

Following critically acclaimed performances in New York, James Austin Smith brings his musical-historical project Hearing Memory to German audiences. Presented with oboist Christian Wetzel and students of the Cologne Conservatory of Music and Dance, the performances explore an overlooked East German avant-garde that flourished in the 1970s and 1980s. In an era of strained international relations, they tell the story of the German-German Oboe Duo, a cross-border collaboration between two adventurous oboists that helped to reveal cracks in the Iron Curtain.

She adeptly and divinely interprets the masters, while also being a bold advocate of genre-crossing storytelling and newly-commissioned works.
